Daily Schedule:

We begin each morning together in the studio, with the weather forecast in hand, where we will discuss the plan and objectives for the day.  Most days, weather permitting, we will travel in convoy in our cars to our painting location for the day.  Should weather be less than desired never fear for all our studios are set within sheltered garden environments filled with painting views close to the studio shelter. The hardy may opt for outdoor options while others may prefer the studio comforts. Both are easily accommodated.

Every morning, rain or shine, there will be an interactive demonstration of a chosen view whilst discussing painting techniques: describing and showing the method used in simple steps performed either on site or in the studio.  Students with less experience may like to follow along step by step, while those with more experience may use these demonstrations as a springboard to fire their imaginations and set out on their own project in the vicinity.

Susan is on hand for group and one-to-one instruction the whole work day. Previous participants have been amazed at how far their painting confidence and skills have progressed with Susan’s insightful support.

Class numbers are strictly limited ensuring each individual has all the attention they need.

Particularly in our Masterclasses we have found that participants gain valuable perspective and confidence in the sharing of ideas and approaches; painting is generally a solitary activity and too often it can become isolated. These painting classes are a source of inspiration on many levels.

The Practical Stuff:
All studios have tea and coffee-making facilities. However, lunches are up to you, and as painting is usually ‘in the field’, we recommend you bring a packed lunch built to sustain you for the day, plus a hot drink.

As much as we would like to, we cannot guarantee the weather. Please bring what you need to easily handle strong sunshine, (sunscreen/sunglasses) or a cold wind (extra layers and a beanie hat that won’t blow away), or rain, (waterproofs). Seriously, several layers work well, with a decent wind/waterproof coat, and waterproof/sturdy shoes / boots.

About Your Tutor:
Your tutor, Susan Webb, has more than forty years experience tutoring in the Irish School of Landscape Painting, which was founded by her parents in 1957. She has taught a wide range of ages – from children to those in their 90s – with a wide range of ability level – complete beginners to those regularly exhibiting and selling their own work. She genuinely loves leading these groups, gaining much from the camaraderie and idea-exchange that is generated.  She treasures the lifelong friendships these classes have formed.

Susan Webb is a most accomplished artist herself.  She is represented in London by Gladwell and Patterson, in Galway by Kennys Art Gallery, in Clifden by Whitethorns Art Gallery and in Dublin by the Trinity Gallery. She has been exhibiting and selling paintings since age 16, has accepted a number of prestigious commissions of racehorses and racing scenes.  She is known for a variety of landscapes, seascapes, flower paintings, as well as for her equestrian work.

Susan has also done some television work, including being one of the guest experts on Channel 4’s Watercolour Challenge in the 1990s. This on-camera experience made her well placed to cope with the restrictions of lockdowns during the covid pandemic. She quickly changed the school’s trademark in-person classes to on-line classes, with tremendous technical support from her husband and son, utilising green screen, multiple camera angles and advanced streaming and recording techniques.

The Irish School of Landscape Painting now boasts a truly impressive library of past recordings. It contains several hundred hours of recorded instruction covering many types of painting techniques in oils, acrylics, watercolour and mixed media, along with study of the works and lives of many important and inspirational artists. Susan emphasises the ways in which participants can adapt these learned techniques to apply to their own works, without losing the sense of their own unique style.

What You Can Expect to Receive:
Upon booking your in-person class, you will receive one month’s FREE access to this extensive library Susan’s livestream provides. You will be sent an activation link and code, and your month’s access will begin from when the code is first used. Extended access can be arranged at additional fee.

The School actively uses WhatsApp to provide on-going support with online classes. Online participants are able to link directly with the tutor and with each other regarding their individual projects, and Susan provides supportive critiques at all stages of the work.
